With the grand success of Dangal, which broke the box office records to zoom into the 300-crore club, fans are already on their toes to know where their favourite movies rank. Well, with the latest inclusion into the top 6, the older favourites like 3 idiots have slipped down the chart. Have a look into the new rankings and expect more in the days to come.

  1. PK – A movie with a message

With a massive worldwide collection of 735.42 crores across the globe, PK leads the chart as the highest grossing Bollywood hit. The film, starring Amir Khan and Anushka Sharma breaks the stereotypes due to its innovative concept, which is, by far one of the best films with a fiction-comedy based theme. The film has eminent actors like Sushant Singh Rajput, Sanjay Dutt Boman Irani and Saurabh Shukla. The film opened in as many as 22 countries in the opening week. Even in the US, the film ranked 10 in the box office, with a record of $3.75 million. In the process, it pipped Dhoom 3 with a substantial margin and still tinkles the sensations with its storyline. The comedy film was directed by Rajkumar Hirani. The story is about an alien who happens to land on the earth with a mission. The film questions the religious dogmas prevalent in the minds of people in the contemporary society.

2. Dangal – A father’s dream

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, this is one of the best biographical sports based movies of all time. It was released at the end of 2016, and within a few weeks, went on to hit a towering record of 721.14 crores. Well, it has the potential to move on to be the highest grossing films, with some halls still running the movie. It is once again an Amir Khan movie, with Geeta Phogat (played by Fatima Sana Shaikh) as the leading role. She is India’s first female wrestler to win a gold in the 2010 Commonwealth Games. (55 kg). Her sister, Bobita Kumari won a silver in 51 kg wrestling. The film depicts the hardship and challenges that the sportspersons have to undergo, especially female candidates. The wrestling sequences were taught to the entire crew by Kripa Shankar Bishnoi, a coach in the women’s wrestling team. Till now, the film has bagged four awards, including Best Film, Best Director), Best Action and Best Actor (Khan).

3. Bajrangi Bhaijaan – Being Human

This drama film, written by K. V. Vijayendra Prasad and directed by Kabir Khan, won the hearts across the borders with its humanitarian message. Starred by Salman Khan and Harshaali Malhotra, the film gained popularity both in India and in Pakistan, bagging INR 626 crores worldwide. The storyline revolves around a six-year old Pakistani girl, who is dumb and has been separated from her family and country. Khan has been depicted as Bajrangi, a devotee of Hanuman, a Hindu deity. The hardships faced by the star in reuniting the girl with her parents in a village in Pakistan will make every viewer’s eyes tear up. The photography and stills are simply breathtaking and is estimated to be over a whopping 90 crores. The film went on to win our Salman Khan, the Best Actor Award at the 61st Filmfare Awards. It also got the Filmfare Award for best story.

4. Dhoom 3 – Double Aamir

It was a 2013 thriller, produced by Aditya Chopra. The story-line was written by Vijay Krishna Acharya and stars Abhishek Bacchan in the leading role. Aamir Khan and Katrina Kaif have rendered great performances and increased the popularity of the film. Grossing INR 595 crores across the world, this movie ran houseful and was loved by most movie buffs. Dhoom 3 has managed to hold its place and stands in the 77th position in the list of highest grossing Bollywood films. The film was also screened during the 2014 International Film Festival of India. And for those of you who do not already know, this movie is one of the most expensive Indian films, crossing the 175 crore budget benchmark. However, Baahubali went on to be the film with the highest budget a few years later. With an engaging story and unpredictable finishing, it is really a gem of a thriller.

It is arguably the fourth highest grossing worldwide Bollywood movies, with a box office record of INR 584.15. The film, starring Salman Khan is a mixed bag of emotion and action. It is again an Aditya Chopra production, directed by Ali Abbas Zafar. This is a romantic sports drama, and revolves around Sultan Ali Khan, who lets his ego get in the way of his marriage due to his successful career. The movie shows Khan at his best as he undergoes training under Larnell Stoval to prepare for the biggest match of his life. The film has a realistic feeling and has a deep-rooted connection with the actual world. The impressive action and performance make the film one of the best films in recent times. 6. Chennai Express

With INR 422 crore as the gross revenue, Chennai Express is the sixth on the chart of our list today. It is a beautiful blend of comedy, fiction and romance. The filming was done between October 2012 and May 2013. It is about a man’s journey to Rameshwaram from Mumbai, where he falls in love with a girl, who happens to be the daughter of a don. The movie is directed by Rohit Shetty and produced under the banner of Red Chillies Entertainment, by Gauri Khan. The film, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone as the lead roles, was the highest grossing Bollywood hit of 2013. Well, this was only the second film after Om Shanti Om (2007) to star this pair. Declared as a blockbuster by the Box Office India, it broke the record of 3 Idiots, created back in 2009. In the international market, it is the third highest grossing Indian film. Although the film got mixed reviews in India, it did break the 1 billion mark in terms of returns.
