An Italian leader of the National Fascist Party, Mussolini killed 300,000 people during his reign. The callous dictator reinstated the death penalties for political crimes, abolished local elections and banned opposition parties. He played a vital role in the establishment of fascism and was well known for his brutal battlefield tactics as well as heavy use of mustard gas and other chemical weapons.
